I don't know if this has already been covered or not, but here goes.
Wouldn't it make more sense to have your, status message displayed beside your name like the [n] thing is?

Who wants to take the time to look at the "who's online?" page anyway, just to find out? anyway, what do yall think?

to me cala, that is the only thing that would make the status worth anything. Otherwise, what's even the point?

Yes, this has been brought up before, and yes, I agree that there's not much point to it unless it shows next to your name.

i agree with kala, no one wants to look at that page anyway, the list of users is at the top

thought about that. Just worried about clutter.

Post 6 by HauntedReverie (doing the bad mango) on Sunday, 26-Nov-2006 12:08:05

maybe cut the status message down a few characters? say, twenty? I mean, leave it in an edit form so we can be creative, just make it shorter?

Also J, how about making it that people can choose whether or not they have status messages visible? At least then, a user can chose if they want what you call extra clutter.

Also to make this more worthwhile, Have a maximum time for which this would display, for example, if you don't refresh the page you drop from the log in list. set it so if you have a status message displayed that desn't happen. and let us know exactly how long we would remain there without having refreshed before the system kicks us.

I agree with the idea that the user status should be available to see with the user name without needing to go to the Whose Online page. Actually, I don't even get the point of the Whose Online page at all, but anyway ... And I also agree that the length of the status message would be OK shorter ; about 20 characters does seem like enough to say what one is doing on the site at the moment.

Post 9 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Sunday, 26-Nov-2006 16:11:03

That's basically all the Who's Online page is anyway, to see what people are doing.

Post 10 by admin (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 26-Nov-2006 18:38:44

I think we'll shorten it to 10-20 characters, but leave it at 50 so if you want to put more, it'll still show on the Who's online page. Thanks for the ideas. To answer a question, you stay on the list for 10 minutes without any activity

I USED THE status feature today, to say i was getting lunch, but it didn't appear at the side of my name, not unless it's only visible to others and not yourself. also, how do you get rid of it when you return? or does it go when you type a quick note?

Post 12 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Tuesday, 28-Nov-2006 18:06:01

and J, how about this too. How about have things that are most commonly used in some sort of combo box? such as "away", "out to lunch", "on the phone"...just have them all in a combo box, and if someone has something other than that, they can put it in the edit field

Post 13 by jmbauer (Technology's great until it stops working.) on Tuesday, 28-Nov-2006 18:28:37

Also...Unless I'm unaware of something, I've found no way to erase your status message once set. You can change it, but logging off the site seems the only way to do away with it completely.

Jmbauer, this is a known bug and will be fixed.

Using a combo box and an input field (if a message that you want isn't there) is a good idea. This could be done using just 4 start tags: <form>, <select>, <textarea>, and <input>.

Jay, ten minutes? Why is it that sometimes I see a private quicknote sent 45 minutes ago?
